Death: a meaning to life?
"It is the presence of death that gives meaning to life." During the First World War, Maurice Genevoix , the author of this quote, narrowly escaped death closely. And he lived that of his brothers in combat he saw die in front near him. Haunted by the painful experience, the presence of death will be for him, which gives meaning to life.
It is not the only one to see it that way. It has probably not wrong. Who can remain indifferent to this reality that affects us all deeply. Each in its time, we will all have to face it. Being still young, I knew a veteran say he had grown accustomed to seeing his friends jump around him, one after the other in the trenches. He was not indifferent to the carnage, of course, but it arose more questions. The proximity of death, had given him his answer: he knew she was not the end! Strong feeling that is not dictated by reason, but it must, as an incontestable truth. He could then live serene death of his friends and his feeling that he believed in the circumstances, imminent.
Some prefer to think that after death, there is nothing. They also face death with resignation and courage, not fearing death after a full life. We do not all have the same sensitivity, and our medium of education is for many. Adult life is often responsible for the loss of these truths childlike (not childish synonym!) We no longer know to keep. Often, they return when certain events to us.
curious paradox: death, loss of biological life, that of the physical body is what gives him sense! Death, indeed, can not attain the essence of our being. Spiritual nature, our essential being, can not die. It is assumed by the great Life. That's why Maurice Genevoix , this death is in the sign of the permanence of life. It does not remove the mystery, but it illuminates. Moreover
much, without reference to any spiritual tradition, sense this continuity of life. They live this transition as a natural consequence of their birth. They foresee the truth as an innate, not rational.
Thank Maurice Genevoix have affirmed this truth, both obvious and yet in doubt. His eternal home, his voice is still heard.
